Crane rental and sales company DS Lausnir has taken delivery of two Manitowoc Grove all-terrain cranes – a GMK5250XL-1 and a GMK5150L-1 – which are designed to handle the harsh winter conditions of Iceland.

The GMK5250XL-1 has a 250-tonne lifting capacity and a 78.5 m main boom. DS Lausnir’s model comes with Grove’s snow cover package, which includes carrier cab bottom protection, a hose reel cover, and a valve block cover. Along with this, the GMK5250XL-1 has winter tires, auxiliary heaters for both the upper and lower cabs, and LED front and back lights to ensure optimal visibility in low-light conditions.
Meanwhile, the 150-tonne capacity GMK5150-L has a 60 m main boom and features the same snow cover package and winter tires as DS Lausnir’s GMK5250XL-1. It is also fitted with a 270-degree birds eye view camera and an advanced LED work light package.
“Iceland doesn’t give you easy weather or easy logistics. We wanted cranes that just get on with the job,” said Daníel Sigurðarson, owner of DS Lausnir. “Our new Grove GMK5150L-1 and GMK5250XL-1 give us the reach, roadability, and all-weather readiness we need for year-round work in Reykjavík and across the country.”
In Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, average temperatures from November to March sit around 0°C and can dip to -10 °C. Daylight hours are anywhere between four and seven hours.
