Moore Concrete plans expansion

As Moore Concrete prepares to expand its facilities in Northern Ireland, the company is working with material handling solutions provider Combilift to keep apace with an increase in production.

Currently, Moore Concrete operates a 75-tonne capacity Combi-SC straddle carrier, which handles over 400 tonnes of concrete on a daily basis. The machine, according to Combilift, has clocked up over 12,000 hours of service since it was put into operation in December 2017.

Moore Concrete’s Combi-SC is the largest straddle carrier to be produced by the specialist manufacturer and is regularly used to lift and transport large, bespoke civil engineering components.

Regarding the company’s expansion plans, managing director Wilbert Moore said: “We can currently manufacture structures up to 22 m long, but the pre-stressed bed we plan to incorporate in our new factory will enable us to go up to 45 m. This will enhance our product range but in doing so we also needed to consider how best to easily and safely handle these extreme lengths.”

As such, Moore Concrete is considering acquiring a second straddle carrier from Combilift. The two companies have been working together to develop a potential solution that utilises two remote-controlled straddle carriers working in tandem at either end of a load. This would double Moore Concrete’s handling capacity around its site.

Further still, the hydraulic telescopic facility on the straddle carrier and the extra-wide doors planned for the new factory will also enable the machine to lift products directly from the production lines for added efficiency.
