ALE supports HS2 with gantry move

ALE has moved a 290-tonne gantry crane in London, UK on behalf of the Costain Skanska joint venture.

As part of the High Speed 2 (HS2) railway project, the gantry crane was moved over live rail lines ready for demolition.

ALE deployed 36 axle lines of SPMTs to move the unit to its final position, 40 m away from the rails.

The UK-based engineered transport provider designed a bespoke bracket that could lift the crane from the jacking points underneath the bogies of the SPMTs. This meant that the crane’s structure was not subjected to stresses during the move, which could have caused the crane to become unstable.

The move was completed in just 11 minutes.

“We faced more challenges than the usual port crane moves we perform, which are typically rigid and do not have the load bearing pressures capped,” explained David Trigg, project manager at ALE.
