Fesco moves cranes from St Petersburg to Primorye

Russia’s Fesco Transportation Group has delivered four Liebherr rubber-tyred gantry cranes from St Petersburg to Primorye on behalf of Global Ports, which needed to move the equipment between two terminals belonging to its subsidiaries.

Using the Northern Sea Route (NSR), the journey from the Petrolesport JSC terminal in St Petersburg to that of Vostachnaya Steverdornaya in the far eastern Primorye region of Russia took 28 days – far less than the 52 days required to travel via the Suez Canal.

Fesco transported the cranes onboard the Nordic Svalbard, obtaining the necessary permission for it to operate under a foreign flag.

Each crane tipped the scales at 117 tonnes and measured 26.2 m long, 13.4 m wide and 25.3 m tall. They were loaded and unloaded using the Nordic Svalbard’s heavy-duty cranes as well as berth cranes.

Fesco said that during the loading process, the electromechanical components were hermetically sealed to preserve their integrity during the sea voyage, ensuring the cranes could be put into service as soon as possible after delivery.

“To ensure the safety of maritime transport from cranes, freight carts weighing 27 tonnes each were dismantled. Cranes and trolleys were mounted on the deck to specially designed and manufactured supporting structures,” Fesco added.
