Hapag-Lloyd gets heavy

December 7 - Hapag-Lloyd has delivered a large propeller on board its containership Antwerpen Express from Shanghai to Hamburg, where it loaded another 166-tonne propeller on the same vessel for shipment to South Korea.

The 166-tonne propeller was loaded on Antwerpen Express using a floating crane at the Port of Hamburg. After being hoisted over the ship's side, the propeller was placed on a pre-prepared layer of flatrack containers and lashed securely.

Immediately after, the 92-tonne propeller from Shanghai, which had a diameter of 9.2 m, was unloaded from the vessel using the same floating crane and placed into storage at the German port.

Meanwhile, another of Hapag-Lloyd's containerships, Phoenix I, shipped a 40-tonne flare stack pipe, measuring 21 m long with a 4 m diameter, from the Italian Port of Genoa to the Port of Houston on its Mediterranean Gulf Express (MGX) service.

Due to the size of the cargo, the pipe had to be transported to Genoa from Montodine by night with a special permit. On arrival at the port, it took three hours to load the flare stack pipe into the hold of the vessel.

A final oversize shipment saw Hapag-Lloyd deliver a Bell 429 helicopter on board its ship Montreal Express from Montreal to Antwerp using a 40 ft flatrack container.
