Project cargo on the rise at Spanish ports

Spain’s ports handled a record 563 million tonnes of cargo in 2018 – with European locations featuring prominently in their business.

A total of 246 million tonnes of freight, equating to 44 percent of the overall throughput, was moved from or to European destinations.

Ports of the State, which manages Spain’s state-owned ports, also noted that project traffic (such as wind turbines, large metal structures and offshore platforms) at its facilities is increasing.

In 2018, the country’s ports processed over 102 million tonnes of solid bulk, 181 million tonnes of liquid bulk, 76 million tonnes of general cargo, 191 million tonnes of containers and 62 million tonnes of ro-ro cargo.
