Crane rental and lifting service provider JJ Curran has utilised Grove GMK6300L and GMK6400 all-terrain cranes to lift a 116.5-ton (115.4-tonne) gas scrubber in Michigan, USA.

The project involved hoisting the scrubber, which measured 109 ft (33.2 m) long and had a diameter of 19.5 ft (5.9 m), from a barge that was docked on the Detroit River. Using the two cranes in a tandem lift, JJ Curran moved the component from the barge on to the dock on Zug Island.

The gas scrubber will now be transported to its final destination at a steel mill.

“The weight of the scrubber and the 75 ft (22.9 m) distance from the centre of the barge to the landing spot were definitely the biggest challenges,” said Chad McComas, crane operator and field engineer at JJ Curran.

“An additional challenge was the 2 mph (3.21 km/h) current of the Detroit River. We had to make the lift off the barge that was in the river. The GMK 6400 needed to handle 54 tons (49 tonnes) at 60 ft (18.3 m) radius, and the GMK6300L had to hoist 49 tons (44.5 tonnes) at a 55 ft (16.8 m) radius.”
