SARR delivers the goods

SARR Freights has completed the delivery of railway coaches and locomotives in what proved to be a complex road haulage project in India.

The coaches measured 22.3 m x 3.34 m x 4.05 m and weighed between 60-70 tonnes. The locomotives weighed 130-tonnes apiece.

The scope of work included providing cranes, handling equipment, and labour required for dismantling and loading the cargo onto the trailers – all under the under supervision of the client’s engineers. SARR Freights was responsible for the entire transportation and unloading at destination.

The units were moved by road from Udhampur to Srinagar – a distance of approximately 400 km that was made challenging by hilly terrain and political uncertainty in the region, said SARR Freights.

The unprecedented nationwide lockdown as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic made the project even more difficult.

SARR Freights, which over three decades has developed a deep understanding of local infrastructure, terrainand local politics, worked with the local authorities to secure the necessary permissions to carry out the transport.

The cargoes, some of which measured 5 m in height, were manoeuvred through challenging road conditions and in adverse weather conditions including heavy snowfall and landslides.

The route passed through the Chenani-Nashri and Jawahar tunnels and additional security was required to ensure the safety of the cargoes.

SARR Freights is a member of the Worldwide Project Consortium (WWPC) representing India.
