EOLFI Group used the port of Tyne, UK, to lift an 11-tonne oceanic data measurement buoy.
The weather and oceanic measurement buoy, also known as BLIDAR, is designed to measure offshore wind as accurately as possible in all weather conditions. The port of Tyne’s Riverside Quay was employed to lift and rotate the 13 m-long buoy using two mobile cranes in a tandem lift.
The BLIDAR will spend around two weeks at the port's Riverside Quay where scientific research equipment will be installed. Once complete, it will be towed to the Blyth offshore wind demonstrator farm where it will collect vital oceanographic data for six months before returning to the port of Tyne to be lifted out again.
