Heavy lift goes on line at St John

May 21 - The Saint John Port Authority in Canada has launched a website to provide "one stop shopping for those looking to ship breakbulk and project cargo," says the authority.

The website - - is a key development in the port authority's breakbulk and project cargo development strategy, according to Captain Al Soppitt, president and CEO of the Saint John Port Authority.

"The purpose of this initiative is to provide information to assist in making an informed decision about breakbulk and project cargo shipments - a one stop website for anyone interested in shipping breakbulk or project cargo through the Port of Saint John. The information provided on the website relates not only to the port, but all suppliers involved during a project cargo shipment or a continuous service for a specific breakbulk commodity. Specifically, the website targets freight forwarders, breakbulk shipping lines, developers, and manufacturers around the world."

Saint John is the largest breakbulk handling port in the region, with a dedicated terminal, ample open areas, and warehouse space. The port has developed business partnerships with local stevedores, terminal operators, equipment suppliers, and service providers.

With the capacity for growth and expansion, the port is a facilitator of trade and a part of Canada's transportation infrastructure, providing a marine gateway to global markets.

The website is a collaborative partnership effort between Saint John Port Authority, Irving Equipment, Logistec Stevedoring, Empire Stevedoring and Fleetway and includes interesting reports of past heavy haul operations at the quayside.

The Port of Saint John, the largest seaport in New Brunswick, Canada handles an average of 27 million tonnes of cargo annually. It lies just 100 km from the United States border, a factor in making the Port of Saint John one of Canada's key ports.
