November 21 - Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has relocated an 850-tonne ship-to-shore (STS) crane for the Port of Helsingborg in Sweden.

The project, which was handled by Kalmar's crane services competence centre for North Europe in Rotterdam, required the crane to be moved by barge from The Scania Terminal in the South Harbour, to the West Harbour of Helsingborg port.

Kalmar organised detailed crane stability calculations, structural stiffening of the crane's main frame, ballast engineering and barge preparation in order to handle the 850-tonne structure, said Bengt Niklasson, manager of port infrastructure at the Port of Helsingborg.

"The crane also required structural modifications to eliminate a 400 mm difference in height between the crane rails at the new location. Additionally, we needed to lower the checkers cabin to provide optimum access, and the high voltage cable reel and support were also repositioned on the structure," added Niklasson.

Kalmar's strategic intent is to become a major global crane refurbishment and services provider, and the company has developed a range of advanced technical solutions to facilitate crane relocations, says vice president of Kalmar Crane Services, Gert Jan Doornewaard.
