September 4 - Aeroscraft Corporation (Aeros) has entered the design freeze phase for its vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capable heavy lift cargo airship, Aeroscraft.
Following the engineering scale-down prototype Dragon Dream phase of the programme, Aeros says that it is now developing main component and test articles for the patented buoyancy system - COSH (control-of-static-heaviness) - as well as structural components for the operational 66-tonne payload Aeroscraft.
The aircraft is unique in terms of its capability, size, cargo handling and propulsion, said Aeros. Its VTOL capability can be achieved at maximum payload with minimal ground infrastructure, claimed the company.
Aeros explained that it plans to complete the design freeze phase of the Aeroscraft by the end of 2015 as part of fleet development efforts to satisfy global demand for the vehicle's new logistics capabilities.
"We are excited to reveal production is underway on the 555 ft (169 m) long ML866, and are committed to achieving FAA operational certification for the first deployable Aeroscraft in approximately five years," added Aeros ceo Igor Pasternak.
