As part of a USD100 million multi-year, multi-phase initiative to modernise the port of Mobile’s general cargo terminal and boost breakbulk handling capabilities, Alabama Port Authority has commenced the demolition and reconstruction of Pier B South.
“Pier B South has stood for nearly a hundred years as a symbol of Alabama’s global trade gateway through the port of Mobile, and now we’re investing to ensure it remains an engine for the next hundred years,” said Doug Otto, director and ceo of the Alabama Port Authority.

The redeveloped Pier B South will feature 1,500 ft (457.2 m) of modern dock structure built to accommodate mobile harbour cranes and other cargo handling equipment. Served by rail, the facility will also be shore-power capable and designed for seamless integration with the port’s general cargo services.
The Pier B South project begins the first phase of the port’s broader general cargo modernisation programme – a multi-year effort to enhance capacity, efficiency and sustainability across the port’s breakbulk operations.
Further elements of the programme include warehouse upgrades; a harbour optimisation study to ensuring the port remains competitive for a wider range of vessels; and a long-term planning effort to prioritise future capital investments.
