August 22 - According to Hans Smits, chief executive officer of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, "the Port of Rotterdam's positive development is connected strongly to world trade, especially that related to China and Germany. I expect that throughput in

215 million tonnes of cargo was handled in the Port of Rotterdam in the first half of 2011, one percent more than in the first half of 2010. Incoming cargo increased by two percent to 153 million tonnes, and outgoing cargo decreased by one percent to 61 million tonnes.

Breakbulk cargo volumes saw stronger growth compared with the same period in 2010 and the port authority said that other general cargo (excluding ro-ro) increased 28 percent. This was attributed to the import of slabs from Brazil to the Maasvlakte terminal. The handling of steel plates and coils is also growing.

Ro-ro cargo volume amounted to 8.8 million tonnes, increasing by six percent.
