Crowley and TITAN relief efforts in wake of Sandy

February 6 - Jacksonville headquartered Crowley Maritime Corporation and its subsidiary TITAN Salvage have completed a number of emergency response projects in the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy.

The hurricane cause widespread destruction on the northeast US coast in October 2012. Shortly after the storm hit, S.S. Wright - a Crowley-managed Maritime Administration (MARAD) ready reserve force ship - relocated to Staten Island, New York, to support the Federal Emergency Maritime Agency (FEMA).

The S.S. Wright teamed-up with the fellow MARAD vessel Kennedy to provide berthing and meals for more than 900 FEMA personnel and Red Cross relief workers.

S.S. Wright was stationed in New York for over a month, delivering over 15,000 meals and overnight accommodation for approximately 4,000 people.

The Crowley logistics team also coordinated the land transportation of pumps, generators and associated equipment in support of the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and the Army Corps of Engineers. Crowley's liner shipping services team based in Pennsauken, New Jersey, provided transportation equipment and truck drivers. A fleet of 150 heavy-haul trucks from across the US and Canada delivered the over-dimensional cargoes to Lakehurst, New Jersey. The Crowley team arranged for the cargo to be unloaded quickly and safely using heavy lift cranes, and onward delivery to destinations throughout the storm-ravaged area.

TITAN Salvage, in co-operation with Marine Pollution Control, deployed its high capacity water pumping systems at the site of the World Trade Center memorial and museum in New York City.

TITAN was deployed on various wreck removal projects across some of the hardest-hit areas of the city. The 1,100 dwt tanker John B. Caddell, was washed ashore on Staten Island, New York, during Sandy's storm surge. TITAN was tasked with oil water and hazardous material removal, securing hull breaches, ballasting and installing anchor points. TITAN, in cooperation with Sea Wolf Marine - a New Jersey based towing specialist - completed the recovery in under five days.
