Liebherr crane aids Able's expansion

February 24 - The arrival of a Liebherr LHM600SHL mobile harbour crane at the Able Seaton Port has marked a major step forward in Able UK's expansion of its port facilities on the Tees and Humber.

The machine, which the company claims is the largest mobile harbour crane in the UK, was delivered from Rostock in Germany and has a load capacity of 208 tonnes.

The crane has been specially adapted to meet Able's requirements, with a 58 m radius and hook height increased from 45 m to 64 m, together with an increased fulcrum height allowing the crane to reach over tall structures, such as semi-submersible oil rigs.

The Liebherr machine will be used for a wide range of activities associated with handling project cargoes, particularly components for the offshore wind sector, as well as maintaining offshore oil and gas drilling rigs and other general port-related activities.

Able has also recently been awarded a contract for the disposal of four offshore structures from the Shell-operated Brent oilfield in the North Sea, which will see three platform topside and a 138 m high steel platform jacket transported to Seaton Port on board Allseas' vessel, Pieter Schelte.

Able's managing director, Andrew Jacques, commented on the investment: "It will certainly help to attract more business to Seaton Port and the Tees, providing more opportunities for local businesses and further complementing the construction of new quays at Seaton Port - one of which will be used for the loading of single piece offshore structures of up to 48,000 tonnes."
