Demolition work has begun at the port of Brownsville’s Cargo Dock 3 as part of a plan to modernise the 90-year-old facility.

Cargo Dock 3, originally constructed in the 1940s, handles a variety of cargo. The project will see the Brownsville Ship Channel deepened to 52 ft (15.8 m).
Funded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Maritime Division and the Brownsville Navigation District (BND), the USD40 million project will allow the port to handle larger vessels.
Sourced from Türkiye, 495 coated steel piles will form the foundation of the new dock. Following the issuing of the notice to proceed for demolition and construction in mid-October, the existing concrete dock will be cut and reused as bank protection to prevent erosion in other areas of the port. Then, new piles, concrete decking and pavement will be installed, with project completion slated for 2027.
