January 25 - Houston-based Specialized Rail Transport (SRT) has reviewed its operations in 2010 and is confident in going forward into 2011, says Bob Felix, SRT president.

The year ended with the delivery of the final of three sets of turbines and generators, destined to an Atlanta-area power plant. This cargo arrived through a south-eastern USA port and travelled by rail to its destination. The turbine measured 4.29 m in height when loaded on the railcar.

In another move, SRT moved three further transformers to two destinations from the Gulf Coast to the US Midwest with a five days transit time.

The 4.90 m high transformers had to have blocks at their bases to avoid obstructions. SRT worked with the rail clearance bureaus and set up a special train service for a portion of the route with the nearest clearances to arrive at their respective destinations efficiently. The company also began to use its brand-new 20 axle railcar.

The current issue of HLPFI (Jan/Feb) contains an exhaustive study of railborne OOG and dimensional freight traffic by correspondent, James Graham.
