A steel cutting ceremony has been held at the Chowgule Shipyard in Goa, India, for the first of six AtoB@C Shipping’s ice-classed electric-hybrid vessels.

The 5,350 dwt general cargo vessels were ordered in September 2021 and the first is slated for delivery in the third quarter of 2023.

AtoB@C Shipping has been closely involved in the design of the vessels. The greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2, per cargo unit transported will decrease by almost 50 percent compared to the existing ships, said the company. The vessels’ battery packs, shore-side electricity solution and electric hybrid use enable completely emission-free and noise-free port calls.
