Dutch transport engineering and heavy lifting specialist Mammoet has added two crawler cranes from Liebherr to its fleet – an LR11350 and an LR12500-1.0 – amid significant growth in the renewables sector, particularly in offshore wind.

Liebherr’s LR11350 has a maximum load capacity of 1,350 tonnes and a hoist height of 220 m. It joins 10 other cranes in Mammoet’s fleet that have a capacity from 1,000 up to 1,350 tonnes. With a uniquely wide main boom, the LR12500-1.0, meanwhile, boasts a 2,500-tonne lifting capacity and a hoist height of 200 m, with its modular design allowing for easy transportation.
Mammoet has made the purchases following considerable growth in the renewables sector, the company explained, where taller and stronger cranes are necessary in order to match growing turbine heights. Mammoet’s involvement in renewables include its work at the UK’s Dogger Bank substation, the Greater Changhua 2b and 4a offshore wind farms in Taiwan, and projects at Buss Terminal Eemshaven in the Netherlands.
“To ensure we continue to have a crane fleet best fitting market requirements and most modern fleet of cranes in the world, it is important that we invest in new machines from leading manufacturers,” said Peter van Oostrom, global projects and assets director at Mammoet. “We therefore see it being in very high demand, particularly for offshore wind projects.”

The LR12500-1.0 is due to be deployed for an upcoming project in the UK, while the LR11350 will be used on an imminent project in the Netherlands.
In November, HLPFI reported that Mammoet had taken over the business activities of ompatriot company Ridderkerks Kraanwagenbedrijf BV (RKB), which came into effect this month.
