CP Rail breaks its own record in heavy weight shipments

November 30 - CP Rail has undertaken the heaviest direct single-line rail cargo in the history of the railway with the movement of two 300 tonne transformers moved from Europe to Lethbridge, Alberta.

The two transformers were shipped from the Port of Rotterdam to the Port of Duluth-Superior where they were unloaded from the ship to waiting CP railcars for transport to Canada. Stevedores from Lake Superior Warehousingdischarged the transformers onto specialised CP railcars, including a new 20-axle railcar managed by US rail freight rolling stock provider SRT. The special train of nine cars travelled along CP's 2000km route to Alberta.

The transformers are destined for a new electrical transmission line, the Montana Alberta Tie Line, the first international merchant transmission line in North America.
