UK-headquartered Trans Global Projects Group (TGP) has moved 22 engines from Trabzon Free Zone in Turkey for a 400 MW power station currently under construction in Sangachal, Azerbaijan.

The 17.7 MW engines, measuring 14 m x 4.5 m x 6.35 m and weighing around 295 tonnes each, had to be moved before the end of the navigable season of the Volga-Don canal system.

They were transported 2,745 km on three general cargo vessels from Trabzon to Baku, where TGP chartered the crane vessel Azerbaijan, which has a lifting capacity of 2,500 tonnes, for the discharge operations.

The engines completed their journey from Baku to Sangachal – 50 km south of the capital – on 16 and 20-axle self-propelled trailers. They were offloaded onto stillages at the site of the power plant using a 1,350-tonne capacity gantry system.

The power station is set to begin operating in 2020.
