Germany-based BKL Baukran Logistik has deployed five cranes to assemble a trimodal gantry that will be used for container transhipment in the west of Frankfurt, Germany.
Contargo Industriepark Frankfurt-Höchst had commissioned a new single-beam, 360-tonne bridge gantry crane as part of the expansion of its container terminal. After being contracted by Austrian manufacturer Künz, BKL deployed five cranes: a 230-tonne LTM 1230-5.1 mobile crane, a 250-tonne GMK5250XL-1 all-terrain crane, a 300-tonne LTM 1300-6.2, along with one LTM 1450-8.1 and one GMK6450-1 – both of which are 450-tonne all-terrain cranes.
The BKL team in Frankfurt opted for computer-aided design (CAD) planning to develop the crane solution, with as little disruption to cargo handling being the main objective. As well as considering the structural integrity of the quay wall, BKL’s team set up the cranes to allow access for delivery trucks throughout, while avoiding any disruptions to rail transport into the terminal.
Work got underway with the LTM 1450-8.1 with a luffing jib on one side, coupled with the GMK6450-1 and the LTM 1230-5.1 on the other, lifting the 140-tonne main girder at its three anchor points to a height of 40 m. Concurrently, the LTM 1300-6.2 and GMK5250XL-1 placed the 17-tonne supports for the gantry crane in the designated position on the water side. The cranes were then moved within the construction area to place the two supports on the shore side.
Despite ongoing logistical operations at the terminal, BKL completed the task on time.
Last month, HLPFI reported that BKL had made orders for 90 mobile and tower cranes whilst at bauma 2025 in Munich earlier this year.
