Mammoet completes four-year project

Mammoet has completed its scope of work at Sasol’s Ethane Cracker and Derivatives project in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

The four-year project saw the global heavy lift specialist handle nearly 400 modules. At the height of the project, Mammoet said it utilised approximately 30 cranes and 450 SPMTs on site.

Notable items from the project included an 800-ton (725.7-tonne) wash tower and a 1,523-ton (1,381.6-tonne) reactor that were lifted using the company’s MSG 80 ring crane.

Mammoet also utilised its in-house adjustable modular lifting frame (AMLF), which enabled the company to adjust sling length and position for different loads without having to lower and reconfigure the frame. With this system, which has a capacity of up to 160 tons (145.2 tonnes), Mammoet was able to set up five modules in one day, in comparison to only one per day when using other methods.

Mammoet’s Gulf Coast general manager, Gerrit van Doornik,said that this project demonstrates the viability of modular construction as an efficient way of building plants.
