Mammoet has teamed up with Fracht to transport oversized cargo for the Usina Termoelétrica Porto de Sergipe combined-cycle power plant in Brazil.
The cargoes were rolled-off a barge onto a pier; Mammoet designed an optimised configuration of trailers for the operation. This solution, according to Mammoet, increased the allowable roll-off weight from 130 tons (117.9 tonnes) to 240 tons (217.7 tonnes).
“By stretching the limits of the port, this plan saved the need for roughly 20 barge trips which would have added approximately 140 days to the schedule,” explained Mammoet.
The engineered transport specialist also prepared a nearby jetty for offloading cargoes that exceeded the weight limits of the port’s allowable roll-off weight.
The creation of a temporary 200 m road linked the port with the jobsite. Mammoet added: “By using this path, the crews were able to avoid road transportation and reduce the impact on local traffic and avoid the need for added logistics to complete the moves.”
The heaviest piece transported was a 400-ton (362.9-tonne) generator and several 250-ton (226.8-tonne) modules. The modules measured up to 30 m x 8 m x 8 m.
Once on site, Mammoet was responsible for lifting each of the pieces into place using crawler cranes and a gantry system.
