Crane rental provider Maxim Crane Works has utilised two 344-tonne Manitowoc MLC300 crawler cranes on behalf of contractor PJ Dick/Hunt for Pittsburgh International Airport’s transformation project in the USA.

The two machines were moved onto the site in May 2022, both configured with a 53-m main boom. Since then, the cranes have been assisting with the construction of the terminal’s skeleton steel frames, some of which measure 36 m long.

Manitowoc said that on two occasions the airport shut down the automated people movers (APMs) connecting the airside and landside terminals while the cranes lifted steel pieces over the tunnel.

“Even though the building is only about 100 ft (30.5 m) tall, we have to have 290-plus ft (88.4 m) of crane height because of how the structure’s geometry works,” said Rob Bramblett, project executive with PJ Dick/Hunt.

Over 14,514 tonnes of locally fabricated steel is being used for the project.
