Dagen Trucking Company, Stephen Izzi Trucking & Rigging, and DeMase Trucking & Rigging have teamed up to transport railcars from the port of New York and New Jersey to Massachusetts.
The railcars, which will be used on Boston's Orange Line rail project, arrived from China and measured over 66 ft (20.1 m) in length, and weighed 80,000 lbs (36.3 tonnes).
For the project, the three heavy transport specialists utilised a steerable Faymonville MegaMAX semi-trailer from Hale Heavy Haul, an official Faymonville dealer on the US East Coast.
"The steerable option is a must for long loads," said Jim Moeschen from De Mase Trucking. "It gets around tight corners like a regular length trailer and can manoeuvre in confined spaces on jobsites with ease."
The trailer features a compressed length of 53 ft (16.15 m) and a width of 100 inches (2.5 m) without outriggers. According to Faymonville, when the three-axle trailer is not loaded with cargo it can be transported without any escorts or permits.
The deck stretches from 25 ft (7.6 m) up to 42 ft (12.8 m), and can be extended even further using additional deck inserts. The hydraulic detachable gooseneck allows continuous height adjustment for maximum flexibility, said Faymonville.
The latest option for the MegaMAX is a fourth pin-on flip axle to increase the legal payload and ensure even more versatility when travelling from state to state, as HLPFI reported here.
