Allelys powers ahead in the UK

November 20 - Allelys Heavy Haulage has transported the second of three 304-tonne power station transformers for EDF Energy, from Didcot power station in Oxfordshire to the Avonmouth Docks in Bristol, UK.

The transformer was transported on a 32-axle heavy load girder trailer, which measured a total of 100 m long and 5 m wide, and brought the entire weight of the consignment to 640 tonnes.

Before transportation began, Allelys liaised with various authorities to assess road conditions, dispatching its own structural engineers to evaluate the condition of the bridges on route.

The first of the transformers was delivered earlier in November, with the last unit expected to be transported to Avonmouth this weekend.

From Avonmouth the three transformers will be shipped through the English Channel and into the Port of Hull, where they will be transhipped onto a heavy load barge and taken along the River Trent to the Cottam slipway, for final installation at Cottam Power Station.

The entire project, which is part of Didcot's decommissioning programme after it was disconnected from the National Grid in March of this year, took nine months to plan.

EDF bought the redundant transformers from RWE npower to add to the energy provider's strategic spares.
