October 5 - IAG Cargo, the single business unit of British Airways World Cargo and Iberia Cargo, has transported 50 oil paintings belonging to the Fundación Guayasamín from Quito, Ecuador, to Madrid, Spain for an exhibition in the Santa Catalina Castle in Cadiz, during celebrations of the Iberia-sponsored Bicentennial of the drafting of Spain's first written Constitution in the city.
Among the works to be shown are "Las Manos de la Ternura" ("Tender Hands", oil on canvas) and "Los Amantes" ("The Lovers", oil on canvas). The paintings weighed a total of 6.20 tonnes in their protective packaging. IAG Cargo says that art works need special packaging and handling to prevent damage during transportation and these paintings were packed to protect them against temperature changes, and vibrations. The paintings were kept in a vertical position during the flight and were transported in air-conditioned lorries with special suspension systems on the ground.
Oswaldo Guayasamín was born in Quito in 1919 and died in 1999 at the age of 79. He won several national awards in Ecuador as well as major awards in Spain and Brazil. In addition to oil paintings, Guayasamín created murals, sculptures, and monuments.
