May 26 - SAL Heavy Lift, through its wholly owned Singapore subsidiary, SAL Heavy Lift Singapore, has signed a major new contract with Australia's BAM Clough joint venture for the shipping and deployment of LNG and LPG product loading platforms for the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG Project, near Darwin, Australia.
BAM Clough is delivering the Product Loading Jetty and Module Offloading Facility packages of works for the project's onshore LNG facilities under subcontracts awarded by engineering, procurement and construction contractor, JKC Australia LNG Pty Ltd.
The two platforms, being built in Batam, Indonesia, will be among the largest structures ever handled by a heavy lift vessel, says SAL.
The LNG platform will weigh in at a hefty 1,080 tonnes with dimensions of 40 x 39 x 8 m.
The LPG platform will be even more substantial at 1,320 tonnes with dimensions of 45 x 40 x 8 m.
SAL Heavy Lift will engage its specialist ship, Svenja for the task of loading each of the platforms from Batam and discharging onto pile foundations in Darwin harbour. The work is very exacting with tolerances of less than 30 mm. Once in Darwin, Svenja will be required to compete with a tidal range that can be as much as seven metres.
The operation will bring together teams from SAL and BAM Clough, cooperating to develop engineering solutions at the cutting edge of heavy lift vessel capabilities says SAL Heavy Lift.
Justin Archard, managing director of SAL Heavy Lift Singapore and Asia Pacific, said: "Our teams have been working together now for some time (on the Ichthys Project).vThe excellent progress we have made so far is testament to our two companies working to a clear objective."
The first of the two shipments from Batam is expected to take place in mid-2014.
