Burkhalter completes US bridge project

June 13 - Columbus, Mississippi based rigging, lifting and transport provider Burkhalter has placed the final concrete arch for Fort Worth's new West 7th Bridge.

Over the last month, Burkhalter has transported 12 of the 300-tonne precast arches from a nearby construction yard to the bridge site, before lifting and setting the concrete structures into place.

The bridge connects downtown Fort Worth, Texas and the city's cultural district. During summer 2012, Sundt Construction began casting the giant 49.7 m long concrete arches. Once set, Burkhalter used a hybrid tower gantry system to lift, rotate to 90 degrees and slide each arch into a storage area

The first arch was transported and installed during May 2013. Burkhalter used SPMTs to transport each 300-tonne arch from the construction yard approximately one mile to the bridge jobsite. Upon arrival each arch was lifted, positioned and set onto concrete columns using two LR1400 cranes with superlift attachments.

When finished, the new bridge will be wider and safer than its 100-year old predecessor. It is scheduled for completion during autumn 2013.
