December 18 - Cargolux, in cooperation with Globaltrans Internationale Logistik, has handled two shipments of oversized, German-made measuring buoys from Luxembourg to Xiamen, China.

The two buoys, which measured 8.1 m in length and had a diameter of 2.55 m, were transported by Globaltrans with special trailers from Bremerhaven in Germany to Luxembourg Airport and flown onboard two of Cargolux's Boeing 747 freighters to Xiamen.

Cargolux completed the loading and discharge of the aircraft. After Customs clearance, both buoys were transported by specialised trucks to their final destination in Fuzhou.

The buoys are destined for the offshore wind farms in Zhangpu and Changle, off the coast of China's Fujian province.

"To ensure safest transportation, the weight and complex dimensions of the buoys, with its very sensible electronic equipment, required the design and manufacture of special transport frames. In addition we were challenged by a very time sensitive shipment, not allowing us any complications or delays," explained Kay Uwe Gretsch, ceo Globaltrans Germany, adding that Cargolux's B747 freighters to Xiamen offered the best solution for the project.

The buoys were designed by the German Fraunhofer Institut and will measure the wind speed in the designated locations up to a height of 200 m from their position on the sea surface to allow precise calculation of the wind farms' electricity yield.
