Transport of the year for Collett

June 12 - Collett Transport has won the 2014 Transport Job of the Year award in the under 120 tonnes category at the ESTA Awards for Excellence.

Collett's entry focused on the transportation of two 41-tonne cyclones, each measuring 21.1 m long and 5.9 m in diameter, from the Port of Goole to the Ferrybridge power station in North Yorkshire via the company's heavy lift terminal in Goole.

The 48.3 km journey had to be surveyed 12 weeks before delivery. Various route options were analysed and eventually, due to bridge restrictions on the approach to the Ferrybridge site, Collett settled on an indirect route through the historic town of Selby.

It was necessary to remove road signs and bollards en route, as well as inform Selby residents of the transportation route in order to avoid any potential travel disruption on the day.

Collett's heavy lift division proposed and engineered a scheme to lift the cargo from the motorway using a 1,200-tonne capacity mobile crane positioned inside the Ferrybridge power station site.

Collett consulted with the UK Highways Agency, North and West Yorkshire police, motorway network managers and local authorities to ensure that the project was executed safely.

In addition, the company had to apply for a Temporary Prohibition of Traffic Order on a 14 km section of the southbound carriageway of the motorway in order to allow for the cyclones to be lifted from the road into the final site.
