Norwegian offshore services provider Boa and France’s BrestPort have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), aimed at developing innovative floating offshore wind solutions.

The agreement intends to develop innovative methods for launching floating offshore wind turbines from port facilities into open water and to support the development of related port infrastructure.

There will be a particular focus on studying and evaluating safe, efficient, and cost-effective methods for launching floating structures, leveraging BrestPort’s terminal dedicated to renewable energy and Boa’s technical resources, including its fleet of semi-submersible barges. The two are looking to lean on the former’s geographical and industrial advantages, allowing for faster deployment of wind farms in areas such as Brittany and the Atlantic Ocean.

“Developing robust solutions for the launching of floating wind structures is a critical step for the offshore renewable energy industry. It requires not only advanced engineering and specialised vessels, but also a port infrastructure capable of handling large components safely and efficiently,” said Christophe Chabert, chairman of the management board at BrestPort. “This MoU with Boa allows us to combine BrestPort’s strategic location, facilities and experience in industrial maritime operations with Boa’s fleet and offshore expertise.”

HLPFI reported last week that Boa launched three floating substructures for the Eolmed offshore wind project. Meanwhile, earlier this year BrestPort and Ireland’s Shannon Foynes Port Company (SFPC) formalised a strategic partnership.
